A century after the first shots were fired in “The War to End All Wars,” President Barack Obama on this day in 2014 signed legislation passed by both houses of Congress effectively re-designating Kansas City’s Liberty Memorial complex as the “National World War I Museum and Memorial.” The legislation provided an additional designation for the museum, which was previously deemed “America’s National World War I Museum” by Congress after President George W. Bush signed that legislation in 2004.
It was on Christmas morning in 1961 that the shocks from two earthquakes originating near Excelsior Springs, Missouri, were felt in Downtown Kansas City and throughout northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. The second shock (around 7 a.m.) was stronger than the first (about 6:20 a.m.), and an Isoseismal map of the second quake indicates that Downtown and central Kansas City, Missouri, were affected to the same degree (Zone V) as the area immediately surrounding the quake’s epicenter.
(Zone V is characterized by "felt by nearly everyone; many awakened, some dishes, windows, etc., broken; a few instances of cracked plaster; unstable objects overturned, disturbance of trees, poles, and other tall objects sometimes noticed, pendulum clocks may stop")
However, lacking the technology we have today, officials in 1961 mailed about 700 questionnaires to postmasters, police chiefs, newspaper editors, and geologists in the area in hopes of determining the intensity pattern. Afterward, it may have been that the intensity of the quakes in the city were exaggerated due to the larger number of people who returned the questionnaires from the more densely populated area in KCMO.

Jackson Mahomes—Patrick’s 21-year-old brother—was in the news again, this time for getting roasted online by Downtown craft cocktail bar, SoT (South of Truman) after the younger Mahomes complained on TikTok about his experience at the lounge on Grand Boulevard. SoT responded harshly, then ultimately apologized for the unkind (but not necessarily untrue) words they posted about Jackson. Despite KC’s love for Jackson’s big brother (WHAT A GAME THURSDAY!), there were many on social media who thought the young man deserved this virtual kick in the ass. Hopefully it’s a positive lesson learned for everyone involved. Here’s the TMZ story:
